Shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday, April 20, westside Baltimore County fire units including were alerted for a reported apartment building fire in the area of the Future Care Cherrywood nursing facility on Reisterstown Road across from Hannah More School (Fire Box 56-3). Glyndon VFC Truck 404, returning to the firehouse after a response, arrived quickly and reported heavy fire through the roof of a 3-story garden apartment building in the unit block of Caraway Road and immediately requested a second alarm. Engine crews initally attempted an interior attack with several handlines, while truck and squad crews performed searches, but command ordered an exterior attack when a third floor wall collapsed.Firefighters used multiple handlines and ladder pipes to bring the fire under control in about 3 hours. The fire was held to the middle of the group building, and affected nine units. The American Red Cross is assisting residents, and the fire's cause and origin is under investigation. Officials estimated the damage at $850,000. Several civilians were transported with minor injuries to area hospitals.
