Baltimore County firefighters fought a difficult 3-alarm fire on Sunday afternoon, December 16, 2007 at the Sweetheart Cup plant on Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills. Engine 311 (Owings Mills Volunteers) responded to an automatic fire alarm at 2:46 p.m. and when they arrived and opened the doors firefighters found heavy smoke on the interior of the large manufacturing building and requested a full fire box just after 3 p.m. Firefighters had several dozen bales of paper burning in an area that was very difficult to access because of space constraints and smoke conditions. A 2nd alarm was struck at 3:19 p.m., followed by a 3rd alarm at 3:26 p.m. The fire was mostly contained by the building’s sprinkler system, although crews laid multiple lines into the building to help extinguish the fire. Firefighters used a forklift to remove the bales, wetting them down and overhauling outside the loading dock. The fire is under investigation by the BCoFD Fire Investigation Division.
