Shortly after 6 pm on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, a steam pipe exploded beneath Eutaw Street near Pratt Street outside the Marriott Inner Harbor hotel in downtown Baltimore, sending steam billowing more than 25 feet into the air and cascading debris down on the street and parked cars. Windows were blown out of several nearby buildings as dozens of people in the area ran for safety. The Baltimore City Fire Department's response to Box Alarm 23-1 included a full first alarm as well as multiple specialized apparatus. including Hazmat 1 & 3, Special Operations Command 1 & 2, and several squad companies. Veolia North America, which operates the city's steam pipe network, sent emergency crews to the scene and shut off steam to the affected area. BGE emergency crews also responded. Five people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.
