Two construction workers at a college campus were killed Wednesday evening, August 16, 2006, when they became unconscious in a manhole while searching for a tool. The incident happened on the new campus of Villa Julie College in Owings Mills, MD. The first victim reportedly dropped the tool into the sewer and became unconscious shortly after descending about 15 feet to retrieve the item. The second worker called 911 before attempting to rescue his colleague, but tragically, he was also overcome. Baltimore County fire officials said the men were overcome because of a depletion of oxygen. Career and volunteer firefighters, including the department's Advanced Tactical Rescue team and a Confined Space Team from Pikesville Volunteers, worked to free the two men after about 15-20 minutes, but both were in cardiac arrest.
