May 05, 2010 — Around 11:40 p,m. Wednesday May 5, Baltimore County (Maryland) Fire Department Engine 1 responded to a smoke investigation call in the area of Rodgers Forge Road and Blenheim Road (Fire Box -14). While enroute, dispatchers reported receiving additional calls for an odor of smoke and a smoke detector sounding and Engine 1's officer requested a local fire box (additional engine and a truck company). Approaching the area Engine 1's crew smelled a heavy odor of smoke and requested the full fire box be dispatched, and upon arriving at 6819 Blenheim Road they requested the Working Fire Dispatch for heavy smoke showing from a vacant 3-story garden-style apartment building. As crews vented windows and advanced a handline into the building, the smoke intensified. Firefighters reported fire in the basement of the structure with extension upwards and Engine 1's officer requested a second alarm. One firefighter was injured battling the fire and was transported to an area hospital with a knee injury.
