In the late night hours of Saturday May 12, Squad 322 responded with other westside units to an SUV that had overturned on the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 795 to the inner loop of Interstate 695. BCoFD Medic 56 was first on the scene, reporting the overturned vehicle and requesting a rescue assignment, with Captain Fannon of Engine 2 establishing command. Witnesses reported the Toyoya Rav4 was traveling at an excessive rate of speed when the driver lost control and overturned, against the guardrail underneath the I-795 bridge. Squad 322’s crew first stabilized the SUV with ART’s and cribbing and then used the cutters and small and big spreaders to remove both doors on the drivers side and the B-post to gain initial access to the patient. At the same time, the rear passenger seats were cut away to allow EMT access to the patient. Once collared, the seatbelt was cut to free the driver. The driver was transported as a Priority 1 patient to Sinai Trauma with severe head trauma among other injuries. Also on the scene were BCoFD Truck 18, Engine 311 (Owings Mills volunteers), BC 22 and EMS 5.
