Volunteers from Pikesville, Lutherville, Cockeysville and Arcadia fire companies teamed for a training involving an occupied and overturned Baltimore County school bus on Sunday, October 22. The scenario involved a mass-casualty incident and rescue response and was held at the school system’s Wight Avenue facility in Cockeysville. Responders were faced with a motor vehicle crash involving a bus on its side with multiple patients, ranging from cuts and bruises (“walking wounded”) to several children who were trapped. Junior firefighters from Arcadia played the role of the patients. Crews worked to stabilize the bus and assess the situation, requesting additional suppression and EMS resources. The training also included simulated triage using triage tags, logistics of transporting patients to area hospitals, and dispatch communications. There were 8 total patients – one DOA trapped in the bus; two “Priority 1” critically injured victims; four “Priority 2” serious and one “Priority 3”.
