Shortly before 3 pm Sunday, October 5, 2014, Baltimore City Fire Department units were dispatched to a reported building fire in the 1100 block of East Fayette Street. First arriving units reported heavy smoke showing from a vacant multi-story building that once housed the Volunteers of America and requested a 2nd alarm dispatch. Firefighters used multiple handlines and ladder pipes to battle the stubborn fire in the stone building and command special-called Water Tower 1 to the scene to aid in extinguishing the fire from above.
