On Monday night September 12th, Baltimore County westside fire units on the scene of a single vehicle crash in Randallstown were faced with an unusual technical rescue challenge that not many firefighters have seen in their careers. Units from Baltimore County Fire Department Station 18 were dispatched for an accident in the area of the Randallstown library branch on Liberty Road at the Liberty Court Shopping Center, with multiple callers to 911 reporting a vehicle had struck a tree. Due to information being received that someone was trapped in the vehicle, Fire Dispatch upgraded the assignment to Rescue Box 18-3, adding additional units including Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company Squad 322. BCoFD Medic 18, who had just cleared Northwest Hospital, and Truck 18 arrived and confirmed an SUV had struck a tree, the driver and only occupant was heavily entrapped, with the Acura SUV wrapped around the tree and a debris field that stretched more than 40 feet in some directions. Station 18 and PVFC firefighters worked for more than 30 minutes, including a firefighter accessing the vehicle's roof via a ladder, and used multiple sets of rescue tools before they were able to free the driver. BCoFD Medic 3 transported the victim to an area hospital, where they tragically passed away. The Baltimore County Police Department Crash Team is investigating the crash.
