Westview, MD - July 10, 2011 - As the weekend was winding down around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, the tones went off at Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company alerting Squad 322 to respond with other Baltimore County Fire Department units to a vehicle accident with reported entrapment at the intersection of Security Boulevard and Rolling Road, near Security Square Mall (Rescue Box 13 - 21). BCoFD Station 13 (Westview) units arrived to find a two-vehicle crash with one occupant trapped in a Honda Accord and firefighters began triage, patient care and extrication, and command requested additional EMS resources to the scene. Upon arrival, Squad 322's crew assisted Truck 13 with extrication. As Truck 13 worked to remove the heavily damaged passenger side, the Squad crew removed the driver's door and windshield. Once better access to the patient was gained, crews discovered the patient's legs were pinned by the dash. The Squad crew began removing the roof and prepared for a dash roll. Once Truck 13's crew was able to remove the passenger side, the roof removal was completed and the dash was lifted to free the patient. The Squad utilized multiple hydraulic rescue tools including rams, cutters and spreaders to free the trapped occupant. Extrication was completed in about 15 minutes after the Squad's arrival. Two victims of the crash were transported as Priority-1 trauma patients to Baltimore's Shock Trauma Center downtown by BCoFD Medic 3 & Medic 18. This incident marks the first working rescue where the new Squad's equipment was utilized.
