FDNY firefighters battled a stubborn 3-alarm fire in a row of stores on Farmers Boulevard at 138th Avenue in Springfield Gardens, Queens on Saturday, Sept. 19th (Box 4711). The blaze began shortly after 4 p.m. in a 99-cent store and spread to two adjoining businesses, a check cashing establishment and a car service office. Firefighters initially attempted an interior attack on the blaze but withdrew due to heavy fire and smoke conditions,. Four tower ladders and multiple handlines were used. An FDNY spokesperson said the fire was not believed to be suspicious.
