It was a close call for the “B shift” crew aboard Baltimore County Fire Department Truck 1 on Monday, June 4th when their rig, a reserve 1990 Spartan Gladiator/LTI tractor drawn aerial, was involved in a serious crash in Towson while responding. Officials reported just before 2:30 p.m., Truck 1, using Reserve Truck 95 (formerly assigned to Truck 13), was responding southbound on Osler Drive, near Towson University and St. Joseph Medical Center, with its emergency lights and sirens activated, when the driver of a Mitsubishi Mirage attempted to make a u-turn and cut in front of the firetruck and was struck on the driver’s side door. The impact forced both vehicles from the southbound lanes across Osler Drive and into the northbound lanes and eventually off the road. The firetruck stopped just a few feet short of the cab striking a utility pole. As a result of the crash, the driver of the Mirage was trapped in his vehicle. Truck 1 firefighters immediately notified fire dispatch of the incident, called for a rescue assignment (Rescue Box 1-14, Osler Drive & Auburn Drive), and began extricating the victim. The victim was transported by BCoFD Medic 1 to Sinai Hospital’s trauma unit. No firefighters reported being injured. The crash is under investigation by the Baltimore County Police Department Crash Team.
