On the afternoon of December 31, 2015, Baltimore City Fire Department units were alerted for a reported building fire in the 1700 block of N. Ellwood Avenue (Box Alarm 51-13). Arriving units reported heavy fire and smoke showing from a 1-story warehouse and began a fire attack. However, due to the intensity of the fire, command ordered a defensive operation and quickly called for a second and a third alarm, with special calls for additional engine companies and the BCFD Water Tower. In addition to the heavy fire conditions through the roof of the building, firefighters were hampered by having limited access to Side Charlie of the fire building due to a cemetery. The cause of the fire is unknown, and the warehouse is believed to have stored mattresses. It took several hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control and crews remained o scene until the next day.
