Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company (Baltimore County, MD) Lt. Troy Hipsley, assisted by Captain Glenn Resnick and Lt. Michael Weil, recently led six PVFC members in a vehicle extrication and rescue training class. Using Pikesville's Holmatro rescue system, firefighters performed simulated extrications on vehicles donated to the company for training. Firefighters worked with spreaders, ram tools, and cutters from Squad 322, one of eight "heavy rescue" squads protecting Baltimore County, practicing such techniques as a "roof flap" and "dash displacement", both of which would allow easier access to trapped patients. Lt. Hipsley reminded the firefighters to "visualize every cut" and "try before you pry", and stressed the importance of having both primary and secondary/back-up extrication plans. Additionally, ensuring both patient and scene safety were stressed.
