Shortly before 9 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 25, 2007, firefighters on Baltimore County’s westside were called to the Rosewood State Mental Hospital in Owings Mills for a reported building fire. The officer on first arriving Engine 311 initially reported nothing evident but quickly upgraded to smoke showing from a single story school building. Interior crews reported heavy smoke in the building, and incoming engine crews stretched hose lines while truck and squad crews opened up the roof and assisted with lighting and cutting power to the building. The building’s sprinkler system helped as crews quickly extinguished the fire. Approximately 20 mentally challenged patients were evacuated from the building ,and law enforcement on the scene took one into custody for possibly intentionally setting the fire. Units were on the scene from several Baltimore County Fire Department career stations (2 – Pikesville, 18 – Randallstown, 19 – Garrison, 56 – Franklin) and a number of volunteer stations (Co. 31 – Owings Mills, Co. 32 – Pikesville, Co. 41 – Reisterstown, Co. 42 – Boring, Co. 50 – Chestnut Ridge, and Box 234 Association’s Rehab Unit.)
