Catonsville, MD – February 1, 2010 – Despite efforts by Baltimore County, MD firefighters who pulled them from a burning house, two occupants of a Catonsville home died Sunday night in a late-night blaze. BCoFD crews were called to 11 Hilltop Road shortly after 11 p.m., and upon arrival found heavy smoke coming from the house. While attacking the fire and performing a primary search “firefighters found two victims inside and pulled them out,” said BCoFD Lt. Kyrle Preis. The victims were both in cardiac arrest, “resuscitation efforts started immediately” and both victims were transported to St. Agnes Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Preis said. Officials identified the victims as 83-year-old Ruth Head and her adult son John, 61. The Baltimore County Fire Investigation Division is working to determine the cause and origin of the fire, which is believed to have started in the basement and traveled up the walls. It is unknown whether the home was equipped with functioning smoke detectors.
